HOW NOT TO INTERVIEW

Advice from myself to myselves

This video contains only my own replies, and from here I feel it should suffice to explain how the interview went; however, here’s a paraphrasing of the interviewer’s florid responses-

Tell me about your self + writing;
Tell me about Gonzo Journalism;
Well you brought up Gonzo Journalism and now you’re unwilling to talk about it!
Tell me about any technical writing you’ve done for your last job, in specific about the software releases;
How did your typical day look like?
You are unwilling to answer anything and I feel this is going nowhere, and if it comes of any use, We will inform you about you candidature;
No, I do not wish to answer any questions you may have.

Hey, look — if you’re reading this and you’re looking for a job — BE YOURSELF. Sincerely, do! For YOU my beautiful talented friend ARE VALUABLE. You have a voice and you have your whole life experience.

T.b.h. I loved this experience — not the least because I prayed for the interviewer ; but more pertinently because it allowed for some IN-DEPTH shadow work; this shadow was causing a deep fear, humiliation, embarrassment and more:

“You-are-a-waste-of-time-and-space” ; “you-are-disrespectful”;

Do not fear not fitting into the mold that a company has set out for you — it is better to present yourself as who you are then to put on a persona completely incongruent with who you are and then resent the rest of your days wishing you’d been somewhere — anywhere! — else.

And a spot of advice — take the power BACK from unfair power imbalances in interviews. Throw the jab back and tell the interviewer :

Hey I am going to be recording this interview, hope that is fine!

Because then, we may observe something worthwhile — we may give up on lurid hopes of ‘fitting the company cut’ and instead truly be ourselves, in all our dirty, unfinished, messy glory!

And anyways —

Is this why the Japanese consider all Uni degrees to be worthless and pick up students and teach them from scratch all and everything?

That is, is this a culture we want to endorse? The infantilisation of adults?

Beats me! hyuk-ho!

Love, always,

Raghav
